DAY 26 SPOKEN ENGLISH

                                    PUBLIC SPEECH

Section - A: Learn

Public speech is generally considered very difficult by many people. The answer given by one lindian gentleman when asked by an Englishman as to how he could speak so fluently and interestingly in English, which was not his mother tongue - was like this.

"My dear friend, it is not the povertly of language that makes one a poor speaker, it is the poverty of ideas"

So, the first and basic rule of successful public speaking is that the speaker should have some thing to convey. If one has ideas, one would be able to speak and make the listeners feel that they are enriched by gaining new ideas.

The second rule is that the speaker must have conviction. That is, he should strongly believe in what he utters. Otherwise the speech becomes shallow. The listeners will immediatley get a feeling that he is simply dodging over and doesn't himself believe in what he says.

The third rule is about the tone of the speech. If it is a serious subject, one must be seious in tone. If it is to mock at Some Social practice or people, it could combine irony and humour. In general humorous speeches are liked by people more than the serious ones.

For Example:

A man was once talking against lawyers, He told his audience as follows.

"Yesterday one of my friends brought his friends to me and said "Meet this gentelemen, a lawyer.' I said, "A gentleman and a lawyer, what a contradiction!"

The fourth rule is that the speaker should understand the mental level of the audience and adjust his presentation accordingly. If the gathering is highly educated, he needs to be more intellectual in his approach to the topic. If it is average, containing both educated examples to be understood and enjoyed by both the sections. If the gathering is totally illiterate, the speaker should pickup examples and experiences which are within their psychological grasp. He should choose simple language and direct presentation.

The fifth and the last rule is that the speaker should be clear in his thoughts. He should pronounce his words propely. Present his speech pleasanly and clearly. All through his speech he should keep track of his main topic. He should not loss his ground and say irrelevant things.

The Single test of good speech is the presence of a feeling of enjoyment during the speech and of enrichment after the speech. Then only a speaker would not only be rememberd but also be welcomed everywhere.

A good speaker is one who keeps the scent of his ideas spread in the air around him and attracts people like a flower attracts bees.

                                BEHAVIOUR ON THE STAGE

It is necessary that you have to start your speech in a Solw manner. Don't look at the front row audience. Look at only the last row audience.

As a beginner you should not look at the front row people. If you look at them you understand their facial expressons. If any one shows disappointment automatically you get demotivated.

Look at only last row audience. They don't uderstand your nervousness. you don't uderstand their facial expressions.

It is advisable that you need to have eye contact with each and every person. Gestures are also Very important. So use your hands according to the situation.

In middle of your speech, If audience clap, wait till they complete clapping. If you start giving your speech in middle of their claping, they feel that you have not given importance to their clapping. They don't dare to clap again.

It is important that you have to quote the sentences of your previous speaker/guest or agree with the opinion of your previous speaker mentioning his/her name. If you remind the previous speakers opinion or speach, automatically guests, who are on the dias pay attention. Generally all the audience also show consentration on your speech. You will be given more attention.

While mentioning the names of any of the guests look at them directly. Be confident while speaking.
